MBA Admissions Interview Insights

For those of you preparing for interviews, our goal is to meet you and get to know you better. We are looking to collect as much information as possible to supplement your application and to help support your candidacy for MIT Sloan.

We use a Behavioral Event Interview (BEI) model to assess candidates for the MBA program. Our interviewer will spend 30-45 minutes asking questions about your past experiences to better learn how you think, act, and reflect. It’s important to come prepared with stories and examples that you did not discuss within your written application. Keep in mind your interviewer will have reviewed your application prior to meeting with you.

Check out this video of Jen Barba, Associate Director of Admissions, with tips on what to expect during the interview.

This Round we are travelling to 20 different cities to meet with you. If you are visiting campus for your interview, we encourage you to take advantage of the programming we’ve put together to help you learn more about us – you’ll have a chance to visit class and/or join current students for lunch.

Here’s a quick recap with some important tips on the interview:

  • Ask important & thoughtful questions that are meaningful to you!
  • Do your research prior to the interview!…We are not only assessing your past experiences but also your fit with, and enthusiasm for MIT Sloan.
  • Be professional. Dress in business attire.

As a reminder, we will continue to send interview invitations until November 1st. By that date, every R1 applicant will receive an updated decision status.

MBA Round 1 Interview Updates

e62-24

Our Admissions Committee is busy reviewing Round 1 applications for the Class of 2019! We have already begun sending interview invitations to Round 1 candidates, and will continue to send them until November 1st. By November 1st, every R1 applicant will receive an updated decision status.

Round 1 interviews begin next week in Asia and will continue through early December. We will give applicants as much notice as possible when scheduling interviews, and candidates will have the choice of interviewing on campus, or in a city closer to their current location. We plan to visit approximately 15 cities, both within the US and abroad.  The location of the interview will not be a decision factor, but for those who can make it to Cambridge, we host a special program for interviewees, including lunch with current students and a class visit. Please note that all applicants invited to interview have the option to come to campus for their interview.

Final decisions for candidates who had an interview will be released on December 19, 2016. Applications for our Round 2 deadline are due January 17, 2017. Please contact us if you have any further questions!

The Cover Letter for MIT Sloan’s MBA Application

20150826_Info_Fair_August_2015_PHAN_07

We have received many questions this summer about our new cover letter requirement for the MBA Application.

Similar to a cover letter for a job, our cover letter is an opportunity for you to make a case for yourself: why you should be given one of the roughly 400 seats in our MBA program? Tell us how your perspectives and experiences will contribute to our community, and why MIT Sloan is the right place for you! Format the letter as you would for a traditional job application, addressed to my colleague Rod Garcia, Senior Director of Admissions. The body of the letter itself, excluding address information and salutations, should be no more than 250 words.

Stay tuned – we will be sharing more information about our evaluation process soon. Good luck as you begin your applications, and as always, feel free to reach out to us with any questions!

Our website has further details and directions

We also have made some changes to our application. This year, instead of responding to an essay question,  we are asking applicants to submit a cover letter along with their resume. Your cover letter is an opportunity to introduce yourself, describe your past successes, and explain why MIT Sloan’s MBA Program is the right place for you. The optional essay remains available, and you can share additional information about yourself in any format.

We’ll be sharing more tips and information in the months to come. We hope to see you at one of our events this summer!
